More of my work is on Vancouver Island than anywhere else: fishing resorts on Nootka Sound, sea-kayaking camps on Johnstone Strait, a retreat on Salt Spring Island and a dive resort off Port Hardy. I am based in Vancouver, a ferry or a short flight away, and the boat and floatplane legs are planned as part of the shoot.

Nootka Sound and the fishing resorts
Nootka Marine Adventures runs three resorts on the west coast of the island, and no two are alike: Moutcha Bay is the drive-in property at the end of the gravel, Nootka Sound Resort is a floating lodge, and Newton Cove is the most remote of the three, reached only by boat or floatplane. I shot all three plus the guide fleet across two seasons and built four separate 360° virtual tours, one per property, so each could be sent on its own to the guest it suits.
The tours are now deep-linked from the accommodation pages on their website, so someone reading about a cedar yurt or a waterfront chalet lands inside that unit rather than at a generic front door. Their sales team uses them in the booking conversation, and an offline version travels with them when there is no connection.
Kayak camps and the places you cannot drive to
Wildcoast Adventures' Orca Camp is a seasonal sea-kayaking basecamp on the edge of Johnstone Strait, reachable only by boat. Guests commit to a multi-day trip somewhere they cannot visit first, and "wilderness camp" sets a low expectation that the real thing far exceeds. The shoot was built around the two questions those guests actually ask: what am I sleeping in, and what are the days like.
Spirit of the West Adventures runs multi-day kayaking expeditions and lodge-based trips along the same coast. That work meant being on the water in the kayaks and at the lodges at the right light, with drone footage for scale and close handheld work for what it feels like to be out there. Everything launched across booking pages, social channels and trip listings.
From a Salt Spring retreat to a dive resort off Port Hardy
Lightwater Cove is a secluded retreat on Salt Spring Island that had no professional imagery when we started. The package, delivered alongside their new website in 2023, covered drone, a full photo shoot across every space and light, video and a virtual tour. Direct bookings increased and the tour became a conversion tool for guests comparing properties.
At the other end of the island, God's Pocket Resort sits at the edge of one of the most biodiverse marine environments on earth, a remote outpost off Port Hardy for serious divers. The work covered the coastal geography from the air, the rhythm of a dive day on video, and the lodge itself in a 360° tour, so a diver deciding on the journey can see what they are travelling for.

Questions about working in Vancouver Island
Do you cover the whole island?
Yes. Victoria and the south island, the Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo and Parksville, Tofino and the west coast, Campbell River, the north island and the Gulf Islands. Boat-access and floatplane-access properties are normal for me; the logistics of getting a crew and drone gear to a floating lodge are part of the plan, not an extra.
What is the best season to shoot on Vancouver Island?
It depends on what you sell. Fishing and kayak operators want July to September when the guests, the weather and the wildlife line up. Year-round retreats often benefit from a second visit in the shoulder or winter so the site shows the property at its quietest and best value. Weather windows on the west coast are tight, so I build slack into the schedule rather than promising a single day.
Can the virtual tour link to individual rooms?
Yes. Every panorama in a tour has its own address, so your website can link straight to a specific yurt, chalet, suite or the dining room. Nootka Marine Adventures uses this at the accommodation level across their site, and it is the single feature clients tell me they get the most use from.
